Meditation - Sangha Picnic at grass field in Meiji Jingu shrine
Sakura holiday Mar 21, 2023
Blue sky, Forest, on soil, grass field
It’s just only some decades on this planet
This body was alive
This breathing warm chest
The cheek that feels a breeze
A nose that can sniff spring
My strong legs carry me everywhere
The palm that can tell when touching flowers,
soil, warmth, and cold.
These very eyes that can find you
Even this very tender heart inside our chest
can only be troubled, blissful, scared,
angry, loving, wish, just for a short time.
This year, one and only spring
Let us meet under the flowers.
While we are alive, bring ourselves alive,

_____________________________
1. Smile and relax. Stand tall and be happy just to be alive. Let the smile spread through my whole body, to my toes and fingers.
2. Write a morning thank you list to show gratitude. Thay says to remember the conditions we already have for happiness. 3-4 x a week for 5 minutes I write a list in a notebook. Ex. sunshine, trains, having a job, safety, compassion, river nearby, my daughter's smile, our Sangha, friendship. This one practice has changed my life over the years.
3. "Walk like the happiest person on Earth" reminder from Dah-san on what Thay said. So many suffering in the world, I'm lucky.
4. Read only the 1st contemplation before eating with my daughter, and then talk about the loving work that went into all the elements of our meal.
5. Have a morning routine... short but sweet. Use YouTube videos from Plum Village Morning Chant, light a candle, light incense, fill a tiny bowl with fresh cold water, invite the bell, then Great Bell Chant. Be still for 10 min. while my coffee is perking.
6. Observe and notice beauty anywhere in nature, in people and their behavior. Share the beautiful things I see with whoever is with me. Enjoy the beauty together with friends, even with strangers.
7. Observe my own behavior...more like a detective. Look deeply and listen deeply. Admit how I may have created a lack of peace. This is tough training, but day by day, it gets a little easier.
8. Sing PV songs often... while cooking, cleaning, walking and on very noisy train platforms as trains come in or at stoplights in my car or while walking in the subway stations.
Create my own lyrics to some songs.
Walking, smiling, breathing, happy I am awake now; I am alive. becomes on a busy work day.
Reading, checking, copying, stapling I am awake now; I am alive.
These PV songs are my friends. We travel together throughout the day.
9. Write words or phrases from Thay's writings on small cards, put in a small plastic card case and keep in pocket, wallet, bag. I also put a card near my bell and change the message often.
Ex. blessings smile interbeing water reflecting Enjoy your steps. To succeed in the work of observation, we must go beyond both attachment and aversion. Photocopy Thay's calligraphy and put it up where I can see it often...kitchen, laundry room, entry way. Or do the calligraphy myself. Enjoy those words as I get ready to leave the house.
10. Water the beauty I see in others with a compliment. Most people get very few compliments. They bloom and smile when their effort is recognized.
11. Train myself to water my own positive seeds with actions and by saying words of praise or encouragement for myself. Ex. You did that well. You finished it finally. You helped.
12. When my negative seeds pop up, I take time to see them for what they are...ex judging someone, saying rude words, neglecting my exercise, blaming someone instead of being responsible... then I can pull them up like weeds and see what I need to do.
13. In my house, I invite the bell many times. Breathe 3 x. Before and after some activities helps me be mindful of what I've done or what I will start.
14. Learn to accept all my feelings without rushing to change them. Smile at my disappointment, anger, loneliness, or sadness. Try to be with it. Then I can try to "cool the flames" with mindful breathing, movement or especially for me, writing. Let go of feelings that I don't need anymore.
15. Do short meditations and body scans on the train.
16. Make a list of "My Oxygen" to remind myself of the many activities that give me air and space"deep inside of me". Reminds me to feed my soul. Then I'm a much happier person to be around. Ex. make soup, walk near the river, call a friend, dance, clean up a small area, read a few pages.
17. Remember we are all learning. Try to be patient, with myself, too.
18. Empty the little bowl of water I filled in the morning and say "That's enough for today." "I can do more tomorrow."
19. Read a paragraph or a page from Thay's books before sleeping.
20. Celebrate all the wonderful moments in a day. Laugh and keep things in perspective. Be myself. The more I embrace myself and my practice throughout my day, the happier Iam, and the more calm I can offer others.Hugs and songs for you,
Connie
